Hey there – good to have you here, I believe you’ve been looking for a solution about Fungus in nail also known in scientific terms as dermatophytic onychomycosis. You probably know it is hard to find reliable information these days, and that’s kinda why I put together this website. Onychomycosis is a ringworm of the nail which constitutes fungal infection of about half of all nail abnormalities. Parts of your body which are affected by this condition are fingernails or toenails. It all starts by having a white or yellow discoloured and noticeable spot under your toenail or fingernail tip. As the infection spreads, deeper discolouration, thickening, roughness and splitting of nail edges will result. This should not be confused with athlete’s foot, of which the skin of the feet are primarily affected, although they can be caused by the same type of fungus. Basically this infection can create worries and potentially painful problems to the sufferer.
Above is the toenail anatomy to help explain how the four types of fungus invade and affect your finger and toe nails.
Classification
Four classic types of nail fungal infections are known.
- The most common is Distal Subungual Onychomycosis. It is caused by Trichophyton rubrum, a type of fungal parasite that causes persistent infections in the nails by invading the nail bed and the nail plate underside.
- Another type is the White Superficial Onychomycosis. “White islands” or white speckled powdery looking patches are caused by fungal invasion of the superficial layers of the nail plate.
- Proximal Subungual Onychomycosis is the least common form of fungal infection of the nails. It penetrates the newly formed nail plate through the proximal nail fold as shown in the diagram above, and it’s the flap skin that covers the nail just behind the the cuticle. Its infection spreads outward toward the tip of the nail after invading the root of the nail.
- The last one called Candidal Onychomycosis usually affects persons who frequently immerse their hands in water. Its mostly observed in immunocompromised patients, and in persons with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis, or having candidal infections.
Symptoms
The obvious signs that a person’s fingernails or toenails are infected by nail fungus are that, the nail plate have a thickened, become yellowish, or cloudy in appearance. Also a brittle, crumbly or rugged distorted shape with a dull colouration that has no luster or shine. In some cases you may even feel pain in your toes or finger tips and may detect a slightly foul odour. When you face the difficult situation on how to cure a fungus toenail, these are the things which makes it a problem.
Causes
The pathogens responsible for causing fungal infections in nails are dermatophytes, Candida, Syprophytes and nondermatophytic molds. They are microscopic organisms that don’t need sunlight to survive. In some cases certain fungi have beneficial uses, while others cause illnesses and infections. Dermatophytes are a group of fungi that typically cause nail infections, and can be passed from person to person in swimming pools, showers, saunas, nail salons etc. But yeast and molds also can be responsible. All these microscopic organisms have one thing in common, they live in warm, moist environments as explained above. Another reason may be the diminished blood circulation to the toes as compared with the fingers, which makes it harder for your body’s immune system to detect and eliminate the infection.
Treatment
An infection of fungus of the nails may be challenging and difficult to treat, and may recur because it is embedded within the nail and is difficult to reach. As a result, full removal of symptoms is very slow and may take a year or more. Treatments can also include phamacological, lasers, and other scientifically unverified alternative medicines e.g Australian tree oil, Grapefruit seed oil. Over 35 million face the yellow, brittle, and sometimes painful-symptoms associated with nail fungus. You are not alone now in dealing with this, because better medications are now available to help you solve the fungal infection in a healthy natural way for the last time.
